All our PV adventure guides are safe.  The hurricane damage was limited to minimal at our basecamp and office location on Gordon Mountain.  We know out of the areas we live, work, and play; some are gone, some will have been transformed into an unrecognizable state, and others will look and remain close to the same.  That is the best we can hope for something close to normalcy.

PV Adventure Guides, est. 2006

I unfortunately experienced “What has happened up here” to the area I grew up 19 years ago when Hurricane Katrina flooded and devastated the City of New Orleans and surrounding area in August of 2005.  Experiencing Katrina from afar I worried about loved ones waiting and hoping to hear they were alive and safe.  This time we went through the storm and the ones I love worried and waited.

In the documentary film “What has happened down here” legendary New Orleans Musician George Porter Jr. was asked prior to Hurricane Katrina hitting the city, what are you going to do if the city is washed away?

He responded seriously, somberly, but somehow with a bit of brightness in his eye and face, I am going to play music that is what I do.

It took some time and patience for the City of New Orleans and surrounding area to find a new normal, but they have rebuilt.

Some of the places I lived worked and played from my boyhood home are gone, some are transformed, and unrecognizable but some of those places look and remain close to the same.

We hope to find some level of new normalcy soon in Western North Carolina.  Thank you to all the First Responders out there risking their lives to save others.  Thank you to all the second wave of road and line crews working to help us all get back to a new normal.

To those who lost loved ones our hearts go out to you. I write this update with tears flowing from my eyes but tears also filling my heart and mind.  To those still in despair I hope support gets to you soon. To those who spent hours worrying and waiting to hear from loved ones I know from 19 years ago the waiting may be the hardest part. Hug your loved ones tightly.

In time and with a lot of patience our area will rebuild.

When the time comes and our public lands open back up, we will find some places look the same, some unrecognizably, and others gone.

Looking forward to new adventures ahead and the new normal, whatever that brings I know I am going to be guiding because that is what I do.

Grateful to be here.
