The adventure tourism industry has transformed significantly as more people seek unique outdoor experiences that reconnect them with nature. Joe Moerschbaecher is a prominent figure in this evolving landscape, having pioneered canyoneering in the Eastern United States. He founded Pura Vida Adventures in 2006 from his small living room in Brevard, North Carolina, driven by a passion for outdoor education and adventure that has since flourished into a thriving business.

From Living Room to Leading Outdoor Adventure Guide

Launching Pura Vida Adventures from his modest rental home, Joe Moerschbaecher initially focused on mountain guiding and outdoor education. He managed operations out of a cozy 1.5-bedroom space, often providing personalized adventures for guests before relocating to a more visible storefront near the Pisgah National Forest. This move marked a pivotal turning point, enhancing his visibility but also introducing new challenges. As the business grew, so did his discomfort with the overhead costs associated with the storefront. “I began to believe that the additional work and cost were taking me away from my main goal, which was simply to focus on guiding and education,” he recalls. Though hesitant to leave this familiar space, the Covid-19 pandemic forced him to act quickly, leading to a decisive move that reshaped his business.

Bringing Canyoneering to the East Coast

Around the time he launched Pura Vida, Joe discovered a sport that would change his business’s trajectory: canyoneering. This multi-disciplinary adventure, which includes rappelling, swimming, hiking, and climbing, had seen minimal traction on the East Coast. Undeterred, Joe became the first to offer commercial canyoneering experiences east of the Mississippi in 2007, quickly falling in love with its unique challenges. He sought training from respected instructors in the western states and earned certification with the American Canyoneering Association, transforming his company into a pioneering entity in this niche market. Over the years, Pura Vida has trained thousands of adventurers, fostering a sense of community among guests, many of whom return as friends, eager for new experiences under his guidance.

Facing Challenges: The Pandemic and Hurricane Helene

The Covid-19 pandemic was a wake-up call for many in the tourism sector, and Joe was no exception. With travel restrictions and tourism grinding to a halt, he had to pivot quickly. The pandemic served as an unexpected catalyst for change. “I gave my landlord the 30 days notice required to end my lease,” he explains. Although he significantly reduced overhead costs, the pandemic taught him invaluable lessons about resilience and adaptability. By the time he began to regain momentum in early 2024, another disaster struck: Hurricane Helene devastated the region, causing extensive damage to roads and homes. In the wake of the storm, Joe discovered a renewed passion for guiding, realizing how much he cherished his profession. “You do not really know how much you love something until you are not able to do it,” he reflects.

Pivoting to Meet Changing Adventure Trends

Flexibility has been a cornerstone of Joe’s business strategy. Initially, Pura Vida Adventures cast a wide net, offering everything from adventure race training to rock climbing and mountain biking. However, as interest in adventure racing waned, Joe recognized the potential of canyoneering and waterfall rappelling. With the support of the American Canyoneering Association, he shifted focus, strengthening these programs to become the company’s flagship offerings. “We’ve had to pivot on many occasions to meet the changing needs of our clients and the surrounding environment,” Joe notes, demonstrating his commitment to growth and innovation in a dynamic industry.

As Joe looks ahead, he is determined to continue provide an exceptional adventure education experience at Pura Vida Adventures while staying responsive to emerging trends and client needs. His unwavering commitment to guiding and education will remain at the core of his business, aiming for balanced growth and inspiring new adventurers to explore the great outdoors.
